SILVER SPRING, MD – January 14, 2014 – What are people doing to kick-start their New Year’s Resolutions to get in shape? While millions of American are incorporating walking, running, biking, and swimming into their New Year’s Resolutions, they are not the ‘hottest’ fitness trends.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the top ten fitness trends in the U.S. are a blend of the conventional and the unconventional:
- High Intensity Interval Training – “short bursts of high-intensity bouts of exercise followed by a short period of rest or recovery;”
- Body Weight Training – “uses minimal equipment, which makes it an inexpensive way to exercise effectively;”
- Educated, Certified, and Experienced Fitness Professionals – “this is a trend that continues now that there are accreditation offered by national third-party accrediting organizations for health and fitness and clinical exercise program professionals.”
- Strength Training – “there are many other individuals (both men and women, young and old, and children) whose main focus is on using weight training to improve or maintain strength.”
- Exercise and Weight Loss – “a trend toward incorporating all weight loss programs with a sensible exercise program…..The combination of exercise and diet is essential for weight loss maintenance.”
- Personal Training – a popular option for both small groups and one-on-one situations;
- Fitness Programs for Older Adults – “age appropriate and safe exercise programs” are vital;
- Functional Fitness – “replicates actual activities someone might do as a function of their daily living.”
- Group Personal Training – “This trend lets the personal trainer continue to provide the personal service clients expect, but now in a small group of two to four.”
- Yoga – “Instructional tapes and books (for Yoga) are abundant, as are the growing numbers of certifications for the many Yoga formats.”
"It's always interesting to see what trends emerge from one year to the next," said Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, who leads the annual trends research for ACSM. "We see some things that have staying power -- true trends -- while others are fads that come and go quickly. Regardless of the mode of exercise that interests people, we want them to continue to enjoy it safely and remain active through the lifespan."
“With New Year’s Resolutions being implemented by millions of Americans, it’s interesting and eye opening to see what Americans are doing get fit and stay fit,” said PHIT America founder Jim Baugh. “Diversity is alive and well in fitness circles!”
More than 3,800 fitness professionals completed an American College of Sports Medicine survey which has enabled ACSM to determine the top fitness trends for 2014. The survey results, which feature the top ten fitness trends, have been released in the “Now Trending: Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2014” article which was published in the November/December issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal®.
“If you are on a mission to get in shape, it’s important to create a regular workout schedule and then to look for new ideas on how to keep things diverse and challenging,” said PHIT America Research Analyst Cameron Jacobs. “Staying power and the ability to stick with your fitness program is vital.”
