Absenteeism Dropped by Nearly 30 Percent

    SILVER SPRING, MD – October 28, 2014 – As an employee, do you want job security and to work for a company that is productive and profitable?  If so, tell the boss to provide the staff with health club memberships.   Findings American College of Occupationalfrom a number of recent studies support the premise that businesses, whose employees are physically fit, have a better P & L statement and lower rates of absenteeism.

According to a comprehensive study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, absenteeism in the workplace dropped by nearly 30 percent among employees who had a healthy diet and exercised on a regular basis – at least three days a week.

The International Labour Office reports the people with poor nutrition habits have higher incidents of increased absenteeism and sickness…..and their morale suffers.  Obese workers are twice as likely to miss work compared with individuals with normal weight.  The financial bottom line on obesity is that it is costing U.S. businesses nearly $13 billion.

Also, the results of research performed at the University of Texas at Dallas show that regular cardio workouts will improve the memory of employees.

“This research shows the tremendous benefit of aerobic exercise on a person’s memory and demonstrates that aerobic exercise can reduce both the biological and cognitive consequences of aging.  Physical exercise may be one of the most beneficial and cost-effective therapies widely available to everyone to elevate memory performance,” says Sandra Bond Chapman Ph.D., founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth, University of Texas at Dallas and lead author of the paper. “These findings should motivate adults of all ages to start exercising aerobically.”

Additional research released by Stanford University indicates that moderate levels of exercise show cognitive and mood boosting benefits for employees.
