Physical Activity Is The Closest Thing We Have To A “Wonder Drug” CDC Director, Dr. Thomas Frieden

SILVER SPRING, MD – July 2 , 2013 – In a recent exchange with PHIT America, Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reiterated his strong support for physical activity as a way to maintain good health.Dr. Frieden

“Physical activity is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug,” acknowledged Dr. Frieden.  “Being active is one of the most important things people of all ages, sizes, and shapes can do to improve their health.”

PHIT America is leading A Movement for a Fit & Healthy America. “At PHIT America, we applaud the CDC’s support and endorsement of the power of regular exercise.  The foundation of activity in our lives starts with daily, quality PE at school and parents who are active and lead by example,” said PHIT America Founder Jim Baugh.CDC Logo

“There is no single medicine that comes close to what physical activity can do,” stated Frieden.  “People who are physically active live longer and have a lower risk for many chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Being active can help you feel better about yourself and be more productive. Regular physical activity benefits body and mind.”

Besides the benefits of good health, staying fit and keeping a healthy body weight can save you some money.  “Someone who is obese costs $1,400 more per year to care for than someone who is not obese,” noted Dr. Frieden.

According to Dr. Frieden, “Walking is the most accessible and easiest way for people to get physical activity.” He suggests people walk or exercise at least 2 1/2 hours a week.  People are beginning to listen to the experts as 15 million more Americans were walking in 2010 compared to 2005, according to a report from the CDC.

“You have to build physical fitness into your regular routine and that's the way to make it part of your life,” said Dr. Frieden.

PHIT America is also looking to help Americans in other ways.  “At PHITAmerica.org, we have the resources to direct consumers to athletic opportunities in their cities and towns,” said Baugh.  “Just check out our Participate section of our website.  And, please click Advocate to support the key PEP and PHIT legislation which will help get America moving.” In August, PHIT America will be launching a new grassroots program, the Mayors Fitness Challenge, a program for cities and mayors to implement a fun, 10-week fitness program.

PHIT America -- an educational, advocacy and social media marketing campaign -- is designed to reach millions of Americans and create A Movement for a Fit and Healthy America. PHIT America will combat the obesity and sedentary activity crisis -- which is having an adverse effect on health care costs in the U.S. -- by promoting new legislation and grassroots programs that will help get Americans more active, playing more sports, getting fit and becoming healthier.
