SILVER SPRING, MD – The results of a recent study, F as in Fat, conducted by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, projecting the obesity rates to soar to greater than 60 percent inTFAH 3 13 states and above 50 percent for 39 states by 2030, point to the great benefits of the new PHIT America Campaign.

PHIT America (www.PHITAmerica.org) could not come at a better time.  PHIT America will combat the obesity and sedentary activity crisis -- which is having an adverse effect on health care costs in the U.S. -- by promoting new legislation and grassroots programs that will help get Americans more active, playing more sports, getting fit and becoming healthier.

“We have been planning this campaign to combat the obesity and sedentary activity crisis for years. This study just made our campaign more urgent. We see so many benefits to PHIT America. Besides promoting new grassroots programs and new legislation that will help get Americans more active, playing more sports, getting fit and becoming healthier, we can prevent and reduce health care costs.” said PHIT America founder Jim Baugh.  “The U.S. has a major inactivity problem which is influencing increased health care costs. PHIT America and the entire sports and fitness coalition supporting our cause can play a role in preventing these costs before they happen by getting America active and involved in sports, athletic, and fitness activities.”

“Physical inactivity is one of the biggest challenges to the health and wealth of the nation,” said Jeffrey Levi, PhD, executive director of TFAH.  “PHIT America is an important campaign that brings together a coalition of sport and fitness industry experts to advocate for concrete, achievable solutions to promote increased physical activity.”

“Participating in sports or fitness activities is a great way to maintain health, fight obesity and improve quality of life, ” said Jim Whitehead, CEO of the American College of Sports Medicine, one of 120 companies or organizations in the PHIT America Alliance.  “All of us in the sports and fitness arena, including ACSM’s 50,000 members and certified professionals, need to work together to help create a healthier, more active America. We generate the science that points the way to better individual and public health.”

According to F as in Fat, by 2030, Mississippi could have the highest obesity rate – just over 66 percent -- and Colorado could have the lowest obesity rate for any state -- 44.8 percent.  And, the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that obesity rates in 2011 ranged from a high of 34.9 percent in Mississippi to a low of 20.7 percent in Colorado.

From a health care perspective, the rise in obesity will result in more new cases of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension and arthritis.  The findings from F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2012 indicate the number of new cases of those five afore mentioned illnesses could increase 10 times between 2010 and 2020—and double again by 2030!

The findings of F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2012 highlight the urgency for PHIT America to accomplish goals which include:

  • Educating Americans on the issues and their dramatic impact on our country
  • Promoting and investing in more sports, fitness and quality physical education programs to prevent illnesses and costs associated with the obesity and sedentary crisis
  • Advocating for and passing two pieces of US legislation that will enable more Americans to be active and healthier – The PHIT Act and PEP Program
  • Giving Americans tools such as the “Participation Database” on PHITAmerica.org where there a 100’s of ways Americans can get active, fit and healthy

“We invite America to visit and study the contents of www.PHITAmerica.org to learn more. Everyone can help our cause by joining our Fan Club and by clicking on our three ‘call to actions’: Advocate, Donate or Participate. Help us create A Movement for a Fit & Healthy America,” said Baugh.
