Russian Subway Accepts Squats for Payments!

SILVER SPRING, MD – January 25, 2014 – The Russian Government is rewarding its citizens for publicly showcasing their commitment to fitness.  With the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi (Russia) just around the corner, the Russian government is celebrating this global showcase of sport by providing venues for its citizens to exercise and is then rewarding them with complimentary passes on Moscow’s subway system.

In the Moscow subway, there are squat stations which will produce a free ticket for a customer after that person performs 30 consecutive squats.  The squat machine has an electronic monitoring system which will count each completed squat.  After 30 consecutive squats, the ticket kiosk generates a free ticket on the subway system for the successful exerciser.

Look at the video below to see the Russians getting fit with squats on the subway platform.

Russia is also planning to turn the hanging bus handle into exercise bands and installing stationary exercise bikes in some locations that will be accessible to the general public that will produce electricity to charge cell phones.

“We wanted to show that the Olympic Games is not just an international competition that people watch on TV, but that it is also about getting everyone involved in a sporting lifestyle," Alexander Zhukov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee

“Congratulations to the Russians for being proactive and sending such a strong message that fitness is an important aspect of life for all of its citizens,” said PHIT America Founder Jim Baugh.  “While the Olympic Games feature the fastest, fittest, and strongest athletes in the world, it’s important to realize that while not everybody will participate in the Olympics, everybody can be committed to getting and staying fit.”
