"Pro-Activity" Legislation For Better Health

SILVER SPRING, MD – February 11, 2014 – While many issues in the U.S. Congress divide Republicans and Democrats, there is one issue which brings both sides of the aisle together.  It’s physical fitness and the PHIT Act. Right now, 17 Democrats and 14 Republicans have co-sponsored this revolutionary piece of legislation, the PHIT Act.

The PHIT Act, when passed, will allow Americans to use Pre-Tax Medical Accounts to get reimbursed for physical activity expenses.  The PHIT Act will help prevent health care costs before they happen by encouraging Americans to be active, fit and healthy.  Leading health and fitness professionals have agreed the PHIT Act is a great way to reduce health care costs.

There is another piece of ‘pro-activity’ legislation which has received bi-partisan support: the Physical Education Program or PEP.  It helps schools rebuild physical education programs with grants distributed by the U.S. Department of Education. With 48% of high schools having no PE and the average school budget for PE at $764 per year, PEP is vital to creating more activity and improving the health of Americans, especially our children.

PHIT America, the non-profit educational and advocacy campaign focused on overcoming the inactivity and obesity crisis in America, has created a simple online advocacy tool to pass pro-activity legislation: the PHIT Act and the PEP Program.

“To help get PHIT and PEP passed, PHIT America is leading a national letter-writing campaign to rally support in Congress to pass PHIT and secure $75 million in funding for PEP. There has never been a more important time for every person interested in promoting physical activity to send a message to individual Members of Congress requesting support for two of the most important pieces of legislation which will help the U.S. become fit and healthy,” said Jim Baugh, Founder and President of PHIT America.  “We are at a critical moment and America needs to make its voice heard.”

The campaign has developed easy-to-use tools on the PHIT America website, where interested parties can easily click to activate a letter to be sent to their individual Members of Congress.  You will send a personalized electronic letter to your local Congressman and your state's two U.S. Senators – seeking support for PHIT and PEP.

Please ADVOCATE now and help this cause. Forward this email to your friends, family, and business associates so they can help, too. If you would like more information on the PHIT Act, please click here. For more information on the PEP Program, click here.

This effort is intended to complement and support the Sport and Fitness Association's National Health Through Fitness Day -- Wednesday, March 5.  This annual event is the sports and fitness industry’s largest and most important lobby day in Washington D.C.
