"We Have To Put PE Back In Our Schools For Our Children's Health & Academic Performance"

SILVER SPRING, MD – March 1, 2016 – Doug Gordon is a man on a mission. He sees two big national issues that he can help fix: (1) children’s health and (2) their academic performance in school. Gordon knows that with one simple change -- putting daily physical education back in the schools -- the lives and futures of children can be improved dramatically.who is doug gordon

“ About four years ago, I heard that this generation of children will be the first to not live as long as their parents or grandparents. Children have become so sedentary and just don’t move or play like they used to play. In fact, two-thirds of all American children aren’t active to healthy standards,” says Gordon, 61, who is riding his bicycle across America to raise money to put daily physical education back into U.S. schools.

“What schools have done to our children is a crime, as 48% of schools have no physical education,” continues Gordon. “Many elementary schools have limited or no recess. The average school budget for P.E. is only $764 per year. The average child moves only 23 minutes during the school day. When you consider that combined information, it’s not surprising that the U.S. academic results have slipped dramatically versus other developed countries. We have told our children to ‘sit and learn.’  But, just the opposite has happened. The lack of movement has hurt academic results. So, I decided to do something about it. I am asking everyone to join me in this effort and support PHIT America which is supplying GO! Grants to schools which are working to rebuild their P.E. programs.”

With the donations for Gordon’s trip, Americans will be giving to a national charity, PHIT  America (PHITAmerica.org), which is distributing grants to under-served schools to help jump-start more movement through daily physical activity initiatives in the schools.

Jim Baugh, Founder of PHIT America, is very excited about Gordon’s mission.

“Doug is amazing. He realizes we need to fight the ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ in America for our kids’ future. When people go to RideDougRide.org, they can donate to support his journey and PHIT America. We will use at least 75% of the donations and push them into schools through our PHIT America GO! Grants,” adds Baugh.

In 2015, PHIT America supported 156 schools with GO! Grants which got more than 50,000 school children up and active while at school.

PHIT America’s goal is to get one million children active through the GO! Grants by 2020. To date, PHIT America has received strong support from top sports and fitness companies.  Now, other non-sports brands are starting to support PHIT America’s GO! Grant program and activities, too.

“We are getting foundations and non-sports companies to look at our model and are impressed with what we are doing for children. And, now we are seeing individuals, like Doug Gordon, who are doing whatever they can to help. We have many charity events which are starting to make PHIT America their charity of choice,” says Baugh. “If someone wants to help school children, like Doug Gordon is doing, please contact us at Alliance@PHITAmerica.org .”

Gordon started his journey on February 15 and will conclude his 2,678-mile journey to California in mid April.  He is headed for San Diego.  To get there, he will travel through 10 states.
